Theology Pub is a dialog based discipleship resource where it is OK to ask tough questions. We take the format of “Public House” (which was, in the short form, the local pub) as a gathering place for dialogue outside the formality of organized institution “sit and listen” forms of learning (chuch, school, even government). We host the main center of gravity in Huntsville Alabama, the “Rocket City,” a place filled with a mix of right brain engineers and left brain artists. We were serious with this mix of folks to match the Berean namesake from Acts 17:11, to examine the Scriptures to see if these things are true.
Dialogue is important to us, so this is the kind of place where you can actually engage, not just sit and listen. If we are honest about what it means to make any real examination of Scripture, that would mean that we have some difficult, uncomfortable, and even unanswered questions too! Sharing a meal together is also important to us, so we encourage people to share one of their daily meals with another person to engage in serious dialogue once each week – so if you run across a regular from The Pub, don’t be surprised if you get invited to lunch or coffee to ask some challenging questions! Our goal is to be simple, warm, and to express the Love of Christ in all that we do.
Origins
The Berean Huntsville church plant closed during the early shutdown period of COVID 19 and “dispersed”. BereanHSV had our origins in an informal Theology Pub gathering as we discussed the ideas and structures of church through the ages, starting with the idea that Jesus shared meals and wine with his disciples in open dialogue as his primary form of discipleship. Unfortunately, due to the restrictions on gathering during the COVID pandemic, the church plant “scattered” and our discipleship strategy was placed on pause. However, we now see the imperative to share what we have learned about relational discipleship as a resource others can use in dialogue. We encourage others holding a local, self organized Theology Pub as a form of discipleship training to leverage these resouces and reach out to share other things you have picked up along the road. We remain a group of believers and recovering sinners gathering to follow that pattern in Acts of meeting together for meals and sharing what we have learned. This will come with a full rebranding and new materials in the near future, for now we are just rehosting a bit of legacy content.
NOTE: This specifically means that some of the older posts, which were blog contents from the original BereanHSV website, are still active for historical reference. If you see any broken links or text on the site that mentions a Berean Church gathering (prior to 2019) note that is kept only for the archives.
